Four year BSc (Geomatics) degree, awarded by the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. There are currently two streams on offer within the degree programme, with some flexibility within these streams, and a third stream is being planned for 2003. The streams are: BSc(Geomatics) in Geoinformatics, with a third year major in one of the following:
Postgraduate Studies Students wishing to specialise further may register for a Masters or Doctoral degree. The Department has a very strong research and teaching record and is respected internationally as a leader in Geomatics education and research. |

Geographical and Environmental Sciences offers students courses in Urban development and environmental geography in the first year. Second year students are introduced to topics such as environmental management and biogeography. At the third year level topics such as atmospheric science, urban studies, tourism, geographical information systems, land issues and rural development, soil erosion and conservation and sustainable cities are available. |

Course in Geo-Informatics 1 & 2 Schedule:
The course forms part of the full honours course in Geography where it can be selected as one of several specialisation courses or as a non-graduate course leading to a certificate. If followed as a separate entity for non-graduate purposes in order to acquire a certificate in Geo-Informatics, candidates must have a university degree, or an equivalent diploma. Certificate courses in Remote Sensing on postgraduate level in collaboration with SAC and GDTA, as well as in GIS. Postgraduate students may also apply through the Department to undertake research in Remote Sensing at GDTA in Toulouse, France. |

Post-graduate programmes (Honors, MSc and PhD) Training focuses on environmental management, applied environmental problem solving, environmental law, catchment management and the use of GIS as a planning tool. The focus of the department is on water resources and as a result of this the course emphasizes the importance of river catchment management, especially in the urban setting. It is a two year full time structured M Sc degree consisting of six taught modules and a mini thesis. |

This GIS course focuses on the application of remote sensing for environmental analysis. The course involves the processing and analysis of satellite images (Landsat TM) of a region in the Mpumalanga lowveld where sugar cane, citrus, bananas and other subtropical fruit is grown. |
