Geography, Geoinformatics and Meteorology

Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies (BSc, Hons, MSc, PhD and Postgraduate Diploma):

All courses have been registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The University of Pretoria is also a member of UNIGIS - an international group of universities offering recognised GIS courses worldwide.

Undergraduate Studies

  • BSc in Geoinformatics: Designed for the student who would like to become a GIS Professional.
  • BA General: Students from the Faculty of Humanities can add a number of GIS modules to their programme. This will provide basic knowledge and skills to use a GIS and also access to the BSocSci (Hons) in Geography with a GIS focus mentioned below.
  • Individual GIS modules:  If you are studying for another degree you could add a number of modules that would teach you how GIS can be used in your chosen discipline (Zoology, Botany, Sociology, Engineering, etc).

Postgraduate Studies

  • BSc Hons (Geoinformatics): Advanced course work in Geographic Information Science. The modules are all provided on a distance-learning basis.
  • BSc or BSocSci (Hons) Geography: Designed for students with a Geography or related background who would like to become an advanced user of GIS in your chosen discipline. Most of the modules are provided on a distance-learning basis plus residential workshops.
  • MSc/PhD (Geoinformatics): advanced research in Geographic Information Science.
  • GIS for Environmental Sciences (GIS785): Designed for postgraduate students in other fields of study requiring GIS knowledge and skills for their research project. The theoretical part of the module will be available on a distance-learning basis while the practical work will be covered in a 5-day workshop.

Professional Development Programme

The Department also offers a complete range of short courses for continuous professional development on an annual basis subject to lecturer availability and demand. The theoretical part of the modules will be provided on a distance-learning basis while the practical work will be covered in 5-day workshops.

Department of Geography and Environmental Management

Course in Geo-Informatics 1 & 2
The Geo-Informatics courses are introductory to the theory and practise of GIS and Remote Sensing respectively as seen from a geographical point of view.

Schedule:

  • Geo-Informatics 1 (GIS) is presented during the first semester of each year.
  • Geo-Informatics 2 (Remote Sensing) is presented during the second semester of each year.

The course forms part of the full honours course in Geography where it can be selected as one of several specialisation courses or as a non-graduate course leading to a certificate. If followed as a separate entity for non-graduate purposes in order to acquire a certificate in Geo-Informatics, candidates must have a university degree, or an equivalent diploma.

Certificate courses in Remote Sensing on postgraduate level in collaboration with SAC and GDTA, as well as in GIS.

Postgraduate students may also apply through the Department to undertake research in Remote Sensing at GDTA in Toulouse, France.

GIS

Geography & Environmental Studies

Undergraduate as well as post graduate degrees in GIS
The general goal is to provide an introduction to GIS and to concentrate on a system that has a large international user base. The course will endeavour to achieve a balance between theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on basic principles and concepts of GIS, on spatial analytical methods and provision of a general exposure to the applicability of GIS.
METHODS

  • Theoretical knowledge of GIS principles and concepts are acquired through lectures, tutorials and self study.
  • Practical skills and experience are acquired by completing a series of practical exercises using a well-known GIS.
