The Mpumalanga branch of GISSA, GISSA-MP, was successfully launched on 26 November 2003 through the collaboration of professionals from public and private sector organizations. GISSA-MP has continued to operate and grow in strength and numbers and currently has a contact list of 60 individuals representing GIS professionals, practitioners, vendors and interest groups from various sectors of industry as well as public and private institutions.
 
Vision and Mission

The vision of GISSA-MP is to be a regional branch of GISSA that truly represents the Geo-Information (GI) community in Mpumalanga as a unified body in order to promote and protect the interest of its members on all forums. The overarching aim of GISSA-MP is ?to cultivate the regional society on the basis of a public, private partnership that will unify GI stakeholders in the province towards achieving improved and integrated usage of GI and GIS within decision support systems.?
 
Regional Objectives

  • To represent the GI community on a provincial level and communicate the regional interests and activities to the national body.
  • To use its provincial platform to communicate with all members and stakeholders in the province about the developments in GI nationally and internationally through meetings, workshops and conferences.
  • To support the development of a geo-information and data catalogue for the province.
  • To foster the growth of GI awareness in educational institutions and all sectors of industry.
  • To support GI skills development amongst the GIS practitioners of the province.
  • To promote a strong commitment by all GISSA-MP members to the GISSA code of Ethics.


Regional Goals for 2005

  • Have an Operational Data Catalogue for the Province by the end of the year.
  • Use the GISSA MP Forum and data catalogue to actively support data sharing.
  • Focus on the Educational awareness drive and influence learners and educators ? have an MP educators? workgroup by the end of the year.
