Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still apply for registration through the grandfather clause?
Unfortunately not. The Grandfather Clause was opened twice already. The second opening was already a miracle. The chances of the grandfather clause re- opening is very slim if not zero.

I was not approved for the category I applied for because I did not had enough experience. I do have that experience now, can I upgrade?
Unfortunately not. The grandfather clause was designed for people with a certain amount of experience on a certain date. It is not open forever.

PLATO registration

I've been active as a GIS practitioner since 2006. In that year I worked for a consultant who's a well-respected Remote Senser in South Africa and who was one of the facilitators of the last National Landcover (NLC). I was under his guidance and assisted in various projects for about 9 months. Although a GISSA member, he's not registered at PLATO.
Since beginning 2007 I've been working at my present-day company and being one of 2 GIS practitioners here (I'm the more senior one), there was no opportunity to sign hours off towards my PLATO registration - none of my superiors have this kind of background and my appointment was to bring this capability to the company. Consequently, no registered mentors were available to sign off my hours over the past 3yrs.

This leaves me with valuable experience and I'm not really willing to let that go down the drain just because of my peculiar position. I sincerely hope that there's a way of testing my knowledge or somehow incorporate the experience towards my PLATO registration.

I think the PLATO registration is of utmost importance and I'm anxiously awaiting your response in this matter.

Thanks for the trouble!

Hello there. I am currently in my last year of my high school career, and I wold therefore like to know, as a prospective GIS practitioner, whether or not it is compulsory to do Physical Science if I want to be a GIS Practitioner? I am very good in maths and Geography, but I'd like to know whether my not doing Science might be regarded a shortfall?

Please reply at zuluazola@yahoo.com

Thank you very much.

Hey
It's probably best to look at GIS courses offered out there and then contact the institution where it's presented.
