Adopting GIS in Schools: Strides made in Limpopo

Though this is not intended to be a comprehensive study on how all schools in the Limpopo province are progressing in implementing the GIS curriculum into their system of teaching and education. This is merely an account of one Teacher who has no form of background education in GIS but only Geography and History, is making strides to bring GIS to the learners. This is a depiction of a fragmented implementation plan that not only is failing learners but educators as well. Systems are already put into place by GIS Authorities and the Government's Education Department to scope the GIS curriculum to glamourice the subject of Geography. I undertake a personal expedition, to bring you a special case involving learners of a particular school in Limpopo and their Teacher who battles everyday to educate them about the truth’s of GIS as a tool and science, and the key to a rewarding and prosperous career. All this effort done without any support from GIS Authorities and the Government's Education Department, after all they would argue that they gave her the textbooks to teach with. The true sense of GIS Education is in the science of its application to solve real problems, rather than the smokes and mirrors found on the Internet claiming to bring Internet GIS to users. Ultimately these are fallacies sold to learners and in most instances they perceive that their GIS career falls in the stream of IT.
